Of course they're not.
American news is done based on what's good for ratings. In fact, American news, just like all other shows (including sitcoms, dramas, reality and contest/game shows) all run based on what's good for ratings, this is intensified in mid-May during what is known as "Sweeps week" where basically every network competes for the highest ratings by upping the suspense, drama and craziness in their shows.
you've probably heard of this. And you have to be fair, alot of people go missing in the US every day, it would be impossible to cover all of them, you would need a separate channel where their faces and info is run across the screen or something to give EVERYONE a fair chance.
